The Development of Secularism in Turkey
Reviews:

starsA Timeless Masterpiece!
For anyone who wishes to study islam and secularism (especially in Ottoman Turkey) this is a "must read" book. Portions of this book was serialized in Dogan Avci's weekly "Yon" magazine in the 1960s. Berkes was deadly accurate in his political forecast....and it is a huge loss for humanity that he died in London and not in Turkey where he had wished to retire. Despite his warnings, look where Turkey is today.

starsA comprehensive history of modernization in Turkey
This book is all about the fight given in Turkey towards modernization or Westernization, starts with 1750 and finishes with modern Turkey. Very complete, changes of cover and birth policies, educational, religious and economic of Turkish nationalism. A book of cooling for the Turks and a exampler so that other nations learn from the experiments. There are too many personalities to know which they were, much of similar names to follow in two years of hunder of fight towards modernization but the author clearly provided phases of cut in each part of the revolution. This book clearly shows that one allowed mollahs of obstacle put on the way of modernization. When Einstein put contacts of a finishing at his theories, finally science the thought in the schools, all the history in this book.

starsStruggle for Modernization in Muslim Turkey
This book must be read especially now by all the Moslems of the world. Obviously, the Moslem world must change, strip Islamic fanaticism which interferes each aspect of the life, of education in justice. The first attempt to do this occurred in the empire of stool. The book is the history of the first movement of modernization in the Moslem world: its challenges, obstructions and results. The reformists in the empire realize that the religion and the institutions social must be separate since was this what the Westerners had done. The reformists want to teach contemporary science in the schools but here the challenge comes. Not! all is in Kur' year thus we do not need to know this alleged science. The reformists try to proscribe the poligamy but the same challenge comes. Not! It agrees with Islam. Generally, the 18th century with the 20th movement of modernization in Turkey faced this kind of challenges by the clergy. Islam was a religion which interferes each of the aspects of the life, each institution social so that it was necessary to separate the religion and the institutions social (secularism). The defeats of the empire to the Russians and the west necessiated these reforms and in spite of the challenges, inch by instituted Turkish of inch were secularized. Turkey of today, in spite of its straws in the democracy and the economy, is held outside like the Moslem country most democratic and more industrialized and serious regional power. There are lessons to take Turkish experiment of secularization and modernization for all the Moslem countries. And this book is excellent start.
